The Boeing 747 Jet Versus the BAe-Aerospatiale Concorde Coursework
The Boeing 747 Jet Versus the BAe-Aerospatiale Concorde - Coursework Example Why build planes so big? The major reason is to carry more people for the same amount of money in the same amount of time, thus creating a profit which is the goal of every big business. The bottom dollar counts and so does the top dollar. But while some lines of big jumbo jets have been successful, other designs have not been so lucky and it is important to understand why one design worked and the other didnââ¬â¢t. For this paper, a study of two plane designs is reviewed: the Boeing 747, a continuously successful company design, now in several versions of the original, and the BAe-Aerospatiale Concorde, now defunct. At the heart of these two planes are the project structures of each and why one was a success and the other a failure. Every product and every service has a project plan that shows goals and how the project is to be managed along the way to the final goal. The truth is that sometimes everything can be well-thought out in a project management plan yet there can be a li ttle monkey wrench thrown into the mix that was never seen or envisioned, and a perfectly designed plan can go right down the drain in a flash (Noland 2012a). The Boeing 747 As commercial airlines began growing in business with more and more people taking to the skies in the 1950s and 1960s, Boeing moved to the forefront in the commercial airlines industry by providing the Boeing 707 in 1958. The 707 carried about 200 passengers and, with an eye towards profits, the concept for the 747 was roughed out which would carry 400 passengers. In fact, the design was initially based on one done for the Air Forceââ¬â¢s C-5 military mega-lifter competition between airline designers to see who could build the most efficient heavy-load carrier for that time. While Boeing lost out to Lockheed in the military contest, Pan American Airlineââ¬â¢s president Juan Trippe was already looking for a design in a plane that could carry 400 passengers. Boeing just happened to have the right design hand y that could be modified into a 400-passenger commercial plane. Pan Am subsequently ordered 25 747s for $550 million and the project was on (Noland 2012a). The New Boeing 747-8F in Flight Fig. 1(Boeing 2012) The 747 Project As sometimes happens in monumental decisions, the order was in and paid for, yet where to build it was another question that had to be solved quickly. With a plane this size, no current factory was large enough to contain it so one had to be built, and quickly. Time was money and Boeing began a massive building structure in Everett, Washington which would encompass 200 million cubic feet, twice the size of the Houston Astrodome, and would cost twice as much as the fee paid by Pan Am for the planes. Boeing invested $1 billion in constructing the building before even investing in materials to build the plane itself. Already operating at a loss, if the plane as a whole, failed, then so would Boeing (Noland 2012a). Yet the target was the market gain that could be mad e if the plane was successful. It was a huge investment for the future, albeit a somewhat risky one when considering how much in debt Boeing began with in terms of the project cost.

The change of resistance of a metal Essay Example for Free
The change of resistance of a metal Essay The power I supply to the circuit will be very important. There must be enough current to measure but not too much which would cause the wire to generate a significant amount of heat, which would affect the result. The current must also remain fairly constant throughout the experiment so any affect it has on the resistance has the same effect on the result. A battery has a relatively low current but in a closed circuit it will drain very fast so it would not be suitable. A power pack would overcome this problem but I will have to keep the output very low. From this equation, Heat Energy = V2t/R it can be seen that p.d, time and resistance determine the amount of heat given out by the wire and thus its effect on resistance. Due to this I want to keep the p. d and time as low as possible and the resistance a value that is not too small. There are also several other problems I will have to overcome if I want to make the experiment as reliable as possible. If I use tap water in my experiment there will be a possible current running through the water due to the slight impurities in the form of ions within the water. This could cause inaccuracies in my results. To overcome this I have decided to use distilled water so my results are as reliable as possible. Another problem I may have is the event of parts of the wire touching in the water, especially if I have a fairly compact coil. To overcome this I have decided to use varnished wire that will guard the wire against unintended conducting. A final consideration is the period of time to supply the current to the wire, if the time is too great then it will cause the wire to considerably heat up which will effect my result, thus I have decided to keep the current running for a minimal amount of time but enough so that the readings on the voltmeter and ammeter are settled and constant. After a preliminary experiment I found I could comfortably fit 5m of varnished, coiled wire in a beaker. I also found that the thinnest available wire I could use was 0. 021 cm in diameter. In conclusion I have decided to use a varnished copper wire of length 5m, with a diameter of about 0. 021cm, which was the smallest available. This should give adequate resistance to measure. I have also decided to use a power pack on a low output setting. Basic Theory The theory of resistance can be very complex to calculate on a molecular scale and it is mainly done by observation. However I can explain in simple terms the theory of how temperature changes the resistance of a material. Electrons colliding with impurities within the vibrating lattice arrangement of metals cause resistance. The energy lost is given out in the form of heat. See diagram bellow. The amount of collisions is dependant on the amount the atoms in the lattice are vibrating. The faster the atoms vibrate the higher the probability of a collision. The temperature of the metal is what affects the vibrating atoms. More heat energy means the atoms vibrate more thus creating higher resistance. Prediction Due to the theory above I predict that the resistance will increase as the temperature of the water rises. From the formulas mentioned earlier and the information from the table I obtained from the Internet, I can predict more accurately what my results may look like. Temperature Resistivity of Copper at 20 Temperature coefficient Resistivity at Temperature Length of Wire Area Expected resistance (Degrees C) Degrees C (ohm m) ? (Ohm m) (m) (Cm2) (Ohms) Plan. I am going to use a beaker of distilled water to vary the temperature of a length of wire, knowing that resistance varies with temperature. To measure the resistance I am going to pass a current through the wire and take readings of the current and potential difference across the wire, which will allow me to calculate the resistance. To do this I will assemble my circuit so the wire is connected to a power pack, I will put a voltmeter in parallel with the wire and the ammeter in series. I will hold the wire in the water my making an MDF support as shown in the diagram with two crocodile clips. I will then heat the water to different temperatures using a Bunsen burner and take a reading every 10? C from 20 to 100? C. I will then turn the power pack on for a period of about 5 seconds to take readings from the ammeter and voltmeter. I will take every reading three times to ensure of no discrepancies between results. I will then average the results. I have decided to use a varnished copper wire of length 5m and diameter 0. 21mm made into a coil. This will give suitable resistance and will change sufficiently to measure the temperature of water. Apparatus needed: MDF piece 5 meters 0. 21mm wire 2 crocodile clips Connecting wires Voltmeter Ammeter Large beaker Bunsen burner, tripod, gauze, mat Power pack Distilled water Thermometer Safety During my experiment I must consider the following:à Caution when using the power pack alongside waterà Caution when using boiling waterà Use of appropriate equipment when moving boiling water Results Trial 1 Temperature i C Potential Difference (V) Current (A) Resistance (ohms) Trial 2 Temperature i C Potential Difference (V) Current (A) Resistance (ohms) Trial 3 Temperature i C Potential Difference (V) Current (A) Resistance (ohms). Average resistance results Temperature i C Resistance (ohms)à Analysis From the graph you can see that there is positive correlation between temperature and resistance and in this set of results it appears to be linear. There are anonymous results at 60? C and at 100? C. This could have been caused by several things, which I will mention later. My graph also satisfies my hypothesis that as the temperature rises; the resistance of the wire increases also. Firstly I would like to compare my theoretical results with my actual results to see the discrepancies between them and if they are at all related. From the graph you can see that the two sets of data are similar. My actual results are in general slightly higher than the predicted ones. Contact resistance between the crocodile clips and the copper wire could have caused this, especially since the wire was varnished and it was difficult to remove all of the coating. The wire may also have been stretched slightly when I was coiling it, leading to thinner areas of wire, which would have increased the resistance. There may also have been kinks in the wire that would have affected the results. I heated the water to the different temperatures after which I removed the heat. During the time between when I removed the heat and when I took the reading it is possible that the water cooled slightly thus giving lower resistance. Another big influence would have been the heating of the wire by the energy given out by its resistance; this would have created higher resistance. Finally the varnish on the wire may have been inconsistent leading to parts touching in the water thus making the circuit shorter and lowering the resistance. The anonymous result at 60? C could have been made by a general loose connection when I took that reading, caused by the experiment being knocked, as it was consistent through my three sets of readings. A more likely explanation is that two parts of the varnished wire were touching where there may have been a scratch leading to a shorter circuit and thus reducing the resistance. When I took my reading at 100? C I had to keep the Bunsen burner underneath to keep it at this temperature. This could have heated up the wire more than the water did, thus causing a greater resistance as shown in the graph. Evaluation My experiment was successful as I managed to construct and use a system to take measurements. The results were reasonably accurate and allowed me to confirm my prediction. I was pleased that my results were strongly correlated. There are several things I could have done to improve my experiment:à Use of more accurate multimeters would have increased the accuracy. I could have used data logging equipment with a thermometer connected to a computer to monitor my results more carefully and accuratelyà I could have done the entire experiment several times and taken different readings each time, instead of taking all three readings immediately after one another I could have used different lengths and thickness of wires to further prove my hypothesisà I could have tried a greater range of temperatures of water by raising its boiling point by adding a salt or similar, I could also have lowered the temperature using ice and a salt. I could have also used a lower current or put in a resistor before the wire to reduce the heating effectà I could have used solder connections and thicker wires to reduce any error in faulty connections If I were to repeat the experiment I would consider the above and in general take more readings to remove any anonymous results. Capital Punishment Essay -- Capital Punishment, Death Penalty
a) Through the Utilitarian perspective, Bedau is a firm believer in the removal of capital punishment; Bedau thinks that no reason is good enough justify the more severe punishment like death penalty on the moral ground, and no evidence of deterrence and prevention is sufficient enough to support the retribution of justice to keep capital punishment. Bedau have raised several arguments direct to the issue of death penalty: The morality of self-defense and death penalty; the efficiency prevention and the deterrence through capital punishment; then finally the inequity treatment towards the racially disadvantaged and poor. Bedau does not believe in justifying capital punishment as self-defense on the moral ground just to avoid further killing of innocent victims. (Bedau CC Pg 406) Self-defense is only justifiable when an aggression is in present with violence, and lives are at risk without any alternate solution to neutralize it. However, in the case of hostile situation there is always more option other than kill or get killed; there is always the third option of running away before engaging in violent acts. (Bedau CC Pg 406) Only when lives are being threatened with the probability death, should the extreme measure of lethal force be applied to the immediate scene. (Bedau CC Pg 406) In the case of execution, there is no immediate harm posting towards any life at the time, along with alternative solution being available, the argument of capital punishment being justify as self-defense is simply not plausible. (Bedau CC Pg407) Capital punishment supposedly is serving as social utility to prevent the convicted to commit crime again and lowering the chance of others to commit the same crime, but Bedau argues otherwise. (Bedau CC... ...would choose to commit crime to make that dangerous money to seek for that thrill as stick up man, and getting away with it. (Katz CC Pg 316) Katz used the example of John Allen to make his point. All John Allen ever wanted was the thrill of being a stick up man; he never enjoyed pimping though the money was good. The record of his behavior shows that he would never stop robbing others for the thrill of living that identity to stick up. John Allen gave up the less dangerous career of pimping, chose the more dangerous route of drug dealing and robbing. (Katz CC Pg 317) By then we can see that crime is a choice, socio-economic factors doesnââ¬â¢t always come into play but more about what character the individual wants to be. After all, the crimes committed cannot be blame on the capitalism and poverty, but the individual themselves; whom the justice should punish.

Definitions of Economics by Adam Smith and Alfred Marshall Essay
According to J B Say, economics was defined as: ââ¬Å"Science which deals with wealthâ⬠. According to the definitions as pronounced by Adam Smith and J B Say, the main focus of study for economics has been defined as ââ¬Å"accumulation of wealthâ⬠or ââ¬Å"science of wealthâ⬠. The following are the merits of the definition pertaining to science of wealth: 1.It focuses on important aspects of economics like production, distribution etc., 2.It highlighted an important problem faced by each and every nation of the wealth, namely creation of wealth and 3.The problem of poverty and unemployment can be solved if wealth is produced and distributed equitably. The following are the demerits with regard to the definition pertaining to science of wealth: â⬠¢It concentrates only on material wealth and ignores creation of immaterial wealth like services of doctors, chartered accountants etc., â⬠¢It also ignores social welfare â⬠¢Science of material well-being: Under this group of definitions, the emphasis is on welfare as compared with wealth in the matter of group. Alfred Marshall, the neo-classicist raised economics from its ignoble position to a noble one and it was he who shifted the emphasis from wealth to welfare. Economics was defined as follows according to him: ââ¬Å"Economics is a study of mankind in the ordinary business of life and it examines that part of individual and social action which is most closely connected with the attainment and with the use of the material requisites of well-being. Thus, it is on the one side a study of wealth and on the other and more important side, a part of the study of manâ⬠. It can be seen that economics has been defined as a study of mankind in the ordinary business of life. Ordinary business of life means those activities which occupy considerable part of human effort. The fulfillment of economic needs is a very important business which every man ordinarily does. According to Professor Marshall, economics has been understood as the study of wealth; however, it is also the study of man, his desires and necessities. The following are the demerits in defining economics as the science of material well-being: â⬠¢It ignores things like services of singers, teachers, actors etc., â⬠¢It is very difficult to state that which things would lead to welfare and which will not. Fashion Flow Theories: Misconceptions
Written Exam Fashion Flow Theories The Instrument of Meaning Exemplified as an instrument of meaning, the fashion system is a menagerie that takes meaning on an arduous cycle. One that sheds light on how its products are idealized, produced, adopted, and then finally discarded after serving its utilitarian or ideological purpose. Mass communication and other conduits of information dissemination play a role in channeling meaning from its origins to the consumer (McCracken 1986). The fashion system flows from one end to the other. At its starting, is the creation or invention of meaning, undertaken by influential individuals or groups that capitalize on their stature or celebrity status. Their influence help reshape ideologies of cultural categories and principles. Fueled by imitative appropriation by those of lower standing, this innovation of meaning is prompted and stimulated (Simmer 1904). American-born singer Lady Gaga is one good example. By using fashion as an outlet of self-exp ression, her avian-garden style of dressing caught attention and liking.Taking full advantage of her celebrity stature, she has brought about societal form in her support for the LEGIT community. Her constant feature and highlight of gays in her music videos and advocacy of marriage equality have inevitably given society new meaning. Her influence has trickled across to other influential individuals who then pass it on further, resulting in what we see today as homosexual taboos being slowly abolished (with countries lawfully engaging in marriage equality, etc. ). Meaning in this sense, has changed from vociferous aesthetics to a political statement.Aside from the designers of the goods itself, meaning transfer is accomplished by another group of people ââ¬â the fashion Journalists. They act as conduits of meaning transfer through their work with print or firm media. They act as social observers of social development and reform, reviewing, inquiring and questioning it. They have to possess a clairvoyant quality as to pick out specific fashions they approve of then disseminating their choices onto their assigned publications. This in turn also affects the designers having their influence felt even before the early adopters of society or opinion leaders.Suez Menses is a British fashion Journalist currently serving as the dead fashion reporter and editor for the International Herald Tribune. Her work there involves reviewing fashion runways and giving her opinions on it, all of which is widely read by the public. Early February this year, Menses published an article for the New York Times titled ââ¬Å"The Circus of Fashionâ⬠. In that article she gave her views on the changing dynamics of the biannual fashion shows; how the focus seems to be changing towards the people who ââ¬Å"peacockâ⬠outside them (Menses 2013).This shift in paradigm stimulated others to rethink, with others giving their own views e. G. Garage Magazine (Take My Picture, 2013). It is such reviews that contribute to the shaping and reshaping of publics ideals of fashion. In the case study of the ââ¬Å"preppie lookâ⬠we see how the fashion system comes into play in this transfer of meaning. Originating from high society, people of upper- upper and upper-lower classes, the preppie look was a signifier of that particular social stratum. The term preppy derives from the expensive pre-college preparatory or prep schools that upper-middle-class White Anglo-Saxon Protestant children on the United States' East Coast (Fashion Encyclopedia 2013). Introduced in the sass, the preppy look has continually gone in and out of style. During the sass soap operas like Dynasty and Dallas brought about this social acceptance for the style. The North Americans who frequently watched these evening soaps generally began to accept and adopt the style of the preppy look due to its association with the show and its characters. This radical change of meaning transcends from what o riginally was being associated with upper-middle class stringent pre-college prep-school dress code, to the incorporation of lifestyle habits by lower standing individuals of North American society. This also clearly models the downward flow theory of adoption of fashion; a style first adopted by people at the top of the social pyramid then gradually winning acceptance at progressively lower social levels (Stone 2008). An innovation of fashion similar to that of ââ¬Å"The Preppy Lookâ⬠is Christian Door's 1947 ââ¬Å"New Lookâ⬠.The Haute Couture house introduced it right after the World War II. Contrast to the conservative wartime dressing, this profligate use of materials was well accepted amongst the social elite. Only a tiny minority of women was in a session to purchase the New Look. Because of its singularity and the fact that no other alternatives were available, the years following 1947 saw the trickling down of the it to department stores and then to patterns that could be easily used at home. The fashion system is an instrument of meaning.Consisting of a vast array of methodically linked elements that take the meaning of something from one end to another, changing and reinterpreting it to suit society. With examples of the preppie look and Door's New Look, the diffusion from high society to mass-market clearly wows the way by which meaning quickly changes and adapts around cultural principles and its repercussion reformation. 3 Misconceptions About Fashion Fashion has grown and transcended from bare necessity to a form of non-verbal communication, almost like an extension of the body. With it, there are common misconceptions that are still vastly kept. One of them is that fashion designers and retailers govern what fashion is or will be, forcefully imposing it onto helpless consumers. Although, to a certain extent, designers and retailers play a vital role in the fashion system as gatherers of meaning and injecting them into consumer goods ( McCracken 1986). However, in actual fact, consumers are the ones who decide the contents of fashion, what it will be. By their acceptance or rejection of an offered aesthetic, the design direction is then focused onto accommodating the consumer. In the example of the upward flow theory of adoption, fashion styles can be seen coming from mass-market, low standing society. With the evolution of fashion dissemination throughout the decades, the way fashion moves has progressively opposed what it used to be 50 ears ago. Beginning in low-income social groups, fashion trends from there move upward into the higher-income groups (Elaine Stone 2008). An example covered by Elaine Stone's article is the T-shirt. Generally associated with blue-collared workers and commonplace sportswear, it took a turn during the sass, igniting a brand new fashion cottage industry. The Channel No. 5 T-shirt was the epitome of what was in-vogue then. As a result, retailers and producers look towards this new direc tion of fashion flow, radically revising their methods of fashion forecasting. Today, more effort is focused on prà ©t-à ¤-porter runways, aiming at the youths. Fashion is not governed by anyone nor is it a helpless process of induction to its consumers. The consumer plays a vital role in influencing and being influence by designers and retailers alike. The second misconception about fashion is that it acts as an influence solely on women.Men and children are as equally responsive and influenced as women towards fashion. A demand for styles and specific products in menswear and childlessness be it in suits, hairstyles or shoes, Justifies the fact that there is an end hat reciprocates and influences. In the case study of ââ¬Å"The Perfecto Jacketâ⬠, we see again the upward flow theory of adoption, in light of menswear. The ââ¬Å"Perfectoâ⬠motorcycle Jacket, by Shoot Brothers Company of New York, became a social signifier of rebellious youth culture. This was because of Maroon Brandon, when he wore one in the widely popular movie The Wild One in 1953. The sinister black sheen and knife-slash like zips personified an attitude of rebellion. It was an indicator of the way street style progressively became accepted as part of social culture (Polishes 1994). This clearly illustrated the fact that men from different social stratum had an influence and were influenced by fashion. There was a process of idealization and adoption, much like how women respond to fashion. The last misconception is that fashion an enigmatic and unpredictable force. Contrary to that belief, design direction and the way it changes can be quite accurately predicted by people known as fashion forecasters. These people study the basis of the fashion system to understand it and to utilize this knowledge into the business aspects of fashion. One major trend forecasting website is WOWS. Their method of research goes as follows ââ¬â input, analysis and output. They offer a smà ¶rgà ¥sbord of analytical perspectives, from in-depth material predictions to aesthetic forecasts. In the article, Elaine Stone mentions that every action has a repercussion effect and questions its link towards fashion. With the Pearl Harbor bombings by the Japanese in 1941 and the terrorist attacks of the World Trade Center on September 1 1, 2001, it is evident how events that spark social change have an effect on fashion (Stone 2008). Those attacks inevitably led to a sense of nationalism and patriotism amongst the American people ââ¬â aptly resulting in a trend for clothing and accessories of the colors white, blue and red.Fashion is not a complex force that requires an extreme level of clairvoyance, but is in fact a logical process that can be anticipated by ways of analysis of past, present and future. With its quick evolution and reinvention, fashion is a complex system that ideas seem to have been wrongly interpreted or conveyed. Some of which involve the misunderstanding of consumer roles to the fact that fashion is too complicated to anticipate. However fashion does in fact engage in a healthy designer/retailer-to- nonuser relationship and through immense study of it, can be accurately predicted.Fashion has grown to be something more tangible and cognitively assimilative. Fast Fashion Consumerism is something we witness on a daily basis. We are incessantly bombarded with imagery that encourages the extensive purchase of products. It is everywhere. In this media saturated world, there is no escape. Fashion in this sense, is exploited. People of the fashion world have become so hungry (Polishes 1994). The fashion cycle gives us a clear idea of how this vicious recess works ââ¬â ideas are generalized, produced, adopted then dropped (McCracken 1986).This all happens at an alarming rate that coincides with the biannual fashion calendar. In a year, there are two conspicuous seasonal showcases ââ¬â Spring/Summer and Audiometer; each happening almost a full season ahead of the actual (for business practicalities). In between that we have Haute Couture, Menswear, Cruise and Resort collection showcases (Mode à ¤ Paris 2013). That totals about 8 shows in a year for the average homogeneous fashion house, a frenetic pace of activity. With its products there, the question then begets ââ¬â What is the driving force of the fashion system? The consumers. Fashion acts as a social determinant. People are greatly concerned about the way they look, it affects they way one is perceived and how one feels about oneself (Gains 1999). The desire to imitate celebrities and the influential people of society is factor that is continually growing on consumers of all ages and the buying power throughout Europe (Simmer 1904 & Reenact 2005). The followers of fashion are the bulk of what the fashion industry is, owes it to its lowers (Stone 2008).Fashion ideas are deemed fashionable when a sufficient amount of people accepts it, and these ideas late r go out of style when people no longer associate with them (Gains 1999). Conversely, fashion acts as an outlet of self- expression, a promotion of individualism. Present-day youths tend to combine various styles to in turn create a look of their own. Noticing this, designers of clairvoyant nature have capitalized on it, encouraging this mixing-and-matching approach of fashion. Aside from the patronage of fashion, technology plays a huge part in the stimulation f fashion. The media acts as a convoy to the fashion system, disseminating information; being responsible for the image saturation in society. The fashion press stimulates and coaxes in consumers, famously inducing tastiness like ââ¬Å"Shop till you dropâ⬠that psyched the American public into mass consumption (Gains 1999). In the example of fashion House Louis Button, their advertisements can be seen plastered on billboards and across the facades of their duplex stores. Their image distribution has also reached platform s like social media whereby they give the consumer a more p-to-date, interactive experience to the brand. It is this way that Louis Button garners patriotism and markets itself and it is this advocacy of consumerism by meaner of media that helps transfer meaning of products towards the consumer. Technological advancements and changing business dynamics are also factors that act as catalysts towards fast fashion. In delineative case study of China and Italy by Simons Serge Reenact, a shift of dominance in production in the amalgamated silk industry of both countries could be observed with the improvement of technology. The efficiency of production and new distribution channels that inversely reflect societal reforms have inevitably contributed to the pace at which fast fashion has increased further (Reenact 2005). The fashion world is one that comprises of its innovators, hungry-for-more consumers and the people who exploit it. Fashion can be said as a salient notion of planned obsoles ce (Gains 1999). Fashion is presented ahead of its intended period of usage, adopted and deemed fashionable, then obsolete when the same people quit it. It is a cycle that repeats itself on a seasonal basis, with its people almost nonchalantly and blindly embracing it.

buy custom Mentors versus Coaches essay
buy custom Mentors versus Coaches essay Mentorship and coaching are the most-recognized recipes for achieving quality today with the help of professional trainers and highly diverse individuals. Mentorship is a process that focuses on informal transmission of knowledge and skills to a junior or amateur in a particular field. Coaching, on the other hand, refers to supportive relation through guiding and correcting a junior, and shares knowledge, skills and attitude. In the wake of increased need for developing competent personnel, the necessity to have mentors and coaches in each field attracted attention in the recent past. Moreover, the need for improved interpersonal skills explains the reasons for increased mentorship and coaching. There are significant striking similarities between coaching and mentorship. Firstly, they aim at nurturing a lesser professional to have the necessary requisites for career growth and development. Secondly, they both involve building a favorable relationship where monitoring and consultation on a particular expertise are the orders of the day. Moreover, both rely on one-to-one communication, periodic evaluation and feedback. As mentors and coaches take the juniors through a series of training and observation, they undertake evaluation of the progress towards desired goals, and feedback is a crucial tool that allows comparative milestone. In addition, both coaches and mentors borrow heavily from catalyzing, motivation, and purposeful assessments (Herholdt, 012). The purpose of mentoring and coaching lays the basis for what was perceived to have a greater knowledge on the examined field. Furthermore, accompanying the juniors and performing illustrations of a particular skill make coaches and mentors to develop a close relationship with a junior. Coaches and mentors also use observation as a tool of evaluation and measurement of actual competence displayed versus the desired standard. Moreover, mentors and coaches are regarded as core competent instructors in institutions and companies and are highly recognized. With the help of coaches and mentors competence, communication and interpersonal relationship rule the daily work, and professional ethics becomes apparent through the conduct with the clients. Coaches and mentors have significantly similar and related objectives: both focus on making a transformational professional through monitoring and guiding. Furthermore, they are purposed to increase the ability of the junior professional to expand his or her personal abilities, reflections and to develop competence. In addition, both borrow from self-experience and seek to inject influence, to stir interest, and to ensure the juniors remain competitive. Garvey, Stokes, and Megginson (2009) recognize that there are certain differences between coaches and mentors. Firstly, coaches work under the stipulated schedule; training sessions are organized, and resources are catered for the process. In the mentorship, sessions occur anywhere, anytime, annd the resources are not mandatory. The greatest resource that mentors have is professional knowledge and time. As for the coaches, they require resources with the specific skills, and learning occurs informally, in contrast to mentorship (Herholdt, 2012). Moreover, coaches work within relatively short time, while mentorship takes longer and is multi-dimensional. Mentors make a long-term connection with their clients while coaches consider the acquisition of the skill a culmination of the relationship. Mentorship, in my view, is the most desirable training that enhances professional training and development. It injects new skills in professional and other personal dimensions. Mentors are influential and professional, they have rather good personal attributes, a right attitude, and can help with psychological growth. Certainly, holistic specialist is the most needed in the current competitive professional development (Garvey, Stokes, Megginson, 2009). Mentors and coaches certainly play a significant role in promoting knowledge, skills acquisition, and guiding the junior professionals through the step-by-step learning. Mentors are good at promoting long-term relations, and their multi-faceted approach makes them first-class specialists. Except the professionalism, training should focus on ensuring that the trainees have the right attitude, develop a core competence and achieve desired objectives. The future professional growth and development depend on mentorship and coaching. Buy custom Mentors versus Coaches essay

The Many Uses of Carbon Fiber
The Many Uses of Carbon Fiber In fiber reinforced composites, fiberglass is the workhorse of the industry. It is used in many applications and is veryà competitiveà with traditional materials such as wood, metal, and concrete. ââ¬â¹Fiberglass products are strong, lightweight, non-conductive, and the raw material costs of fiberglass are very low. In applications where there is a premium for increased strength, lower weight, or for cosmetics, then other more expensive reinforcing fibers are used in the FRP composite. Aramid fiber, such as DuPonts Kevlar, is used in an application that requires the high tensile strength which aramid provides. An example of this is body and vehicle armor, where layers of aramid reinforced composite can stop high powered rifle rounds, due in part to the high tensile strength of the fibers. Carbon fibers are used where low weight, high stiffness, high conductivity, or where the look of the carbon fiber weave desired. Carbon Fiber In Aerospace Aerospace and space were some of the first industries to adopt carbon fiber. The high modulus of carbon fiber makes ità suitableà structurally to replace alloys such as aluminum and titanium. The weight savings carbon fiber provides is the primary reason carbon fiber has been adopted by the aerospace industry. Every pound of weight savings can make a serious difference in fuel consumption, which is why Boeings new 787 Dreamliner has been the best-sellingà passengerà plane in history. The majority of this planes structure is carbon fiber reinforced composites. Sporting Goods Recreational sports is another market segment which is more than willing to pay more for higher performance. Tennis rackets, golf clubs, softball bats, hockey sticks, and archery arrows and bows are all products commonly manufactured with carbon fiber reinforced composites. Lighter weight equipment without compromising strength is a distinct advantage in sports. For example, with a lighter weight tennis racket, one can get much faster racket speed, and ultimately, hit the ball harder and faster. Athletes continue to push for an advantage in equipment. This is why seriousà bicyclists ride all carbon fiber bikes and use bicycle shoes that use carbon fiber. Wind Turbine Blades Although the majority of wind turbine blades uses fiberglass, on large blades (often over 150 ft in length) include a spare, which is a stiffening rib that runs the length of the blade. These components are often 100% carbon, and as thick as a few inches at the root of the blade. Carbon fiber is used to provide theà necessaryà stiffness, without adding a tremendous amount of weight. This is important because the lighter a wind turbine blade is, the more efficient it is at creatingà electricity. Automotive Mass-produced automobiles are not yet adopting carbon fiber; this is because of the increased raw material cost andà necessaryà changes in tooling, still, outweighs the benefits. However, Formula 1, NASCAR, and high-end cars are using carbon fiber. In many cases, it is not because of the benefits of properties or weight, but because of the look. There are many aftermarket automotive parts being made out of carbon fiber, and instead of being painted, they are clear-coated. The distinct carbon fiber weave has become a symbol of hi-tech and hi-performance. In fact, it is common to see an aftermarket automotive component that is a single layer of carbon fiber but has multiple layers of fiberglass below to lower costs. This would be an example where the look of the carbon fiber is actually the deciding factor. Although these are some of the common uses of carbon fiber, many new applications are seen almost daily. The growth of carbon fiber is fast, and in just 5 years, this list will be much longer.

Air Pollution and Cardiovascular Disease Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Air Pollution and Cardiovascular Disease - Essay Example Air is humankind's natural source of respiratory Oxygen. Its preservation may have been openly disregarded, so that the current generation has to face up to the maintenance of its life supportive feature (Goldman 1972). Unfortunately, up to this time, City dwelling is still synonymous to smog dwelling. This haze or smog is created primarily by a mixture of potential toxic chemicals like nitrates, sulfates, and particulates, formed mostly from the automobile exhausts and industrial factories emissions (Miller & Levine 2003). Australians are well aware of the long standing problems poised by these air pollutants that environmental watchers groups have been organized at a state-level. But, the private sector's enthusiasm is not usually matched by the civil servants at the local government level because its power is limited to implementation of the Federal government's policies and decisions. This is despite the fact that the initial commonwealth system has already adopted the Federal system. The bureaucracy appears to delimit after all, efforts to make lighter air pollution problems at the state level. At some other points nonetheless, government must just be cautious with the policies and decisions so as not to create a barrier for prospective business investors, as market flexibility must be maintained, as well as market share in the economic sphere. In other words, where does the Australian governmental economist stand on the latest question of cost and benefits Are there tools and principles that could clarify the issue Where does one take off in making an economic analysis of the environment Body Greening as a dilemma picks-up momentum at the point where the demand for environmental quality accelerates. Australians' demand for quality air as relative to greening was manifested in several instances, and several manners. They conveyed this need by participating in local and national debates on environmental rules and regulations (Garnaut 2008). Some created representative groups to lobby their cause among governmental or political personalities. Others patronize only organically produced products as well as products that are biodegradable despite additional cost. Still others does not mind purchasing expensive homes and living in areas distant from the busier strips of Australia for the quality environment that supports quality living. Clearly, the Australians' demand for quality air which is supportive of healthy living has developed over the years because of the twofold rationale. Foremost are the raised takings which correspondingly raised the purchasing powers of the citizens. Subsequently, the demand for goods and services expanded to some extents as to certainly demand for high quality air also. Australians value for clean air became equitable with their keenness to spend for it. Nonetheless, Australians' awareness of the consequences of human activities which are more often perilous to the air in the environs

D'Andrea Special Occasion Baskets Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
D'Andrea Special Occasion Baskets - Essay Example Me and my partner plans to open a retail shop of gift baskets located storefront in our local shopping mall as well as a virtual storefront on the Web. We envision our shop to be the most up-to-date, fastest, most accessible and the most outstanding gift basket shop in the whole area. Our store will boost of everything that our clients want-from birthday, funeral, Thanksgiving or just a mere "Thank You" gift basket. Every time a new client enters the shop, that person should feel as if they are transported into a new dimension. The store will be filled with 20th century charm but surrounded with the comfort of 21st century since my partner and I are not new in the retailing industry. Me and my partner already ventured into other business like flower shops, merchandising and clothes retailing. Since college, I have already envisioned myself in the retailing business. Since then, I have designed and became a partner for many companies until I met my new partner just two years ago. From that time on, we started to build small companies. And this gift basket business is the latest addition to our companies. We have realized that the gift basket business is somewhat new to our locality; that is why; we have decided to come up with this idea. With this situation, every advantage is on our side. For starters, we plan to be the number one and leading gift basket retailer shopping shop in the area. We plan to do this by extensive promotions on the area and on the Internet. We would hand out fliers and do promotions on the radio and local newspapers. We will also put a site exclusively devoted to our shop and business. We will put up big banners all over the mall. We will go to different orphanages, houses and business establishments to promote our gift basket business. Secondly, the main ambiance of the shop and the gift baskets would that be of old American countryside. The shop would be mainly decorated with wood and scents of the American countryside. This would be e mulated in our "general" gift basket. Although our clients will be ordering varying gift baskets for certain occasions, our old American touch would still be felt in every gift basket that they order. Every gift basket will have that special touch. As part of our long term goal, our company shall be the pioneering gift basket retail shop that introduces flair and tribute to the old American countryside through its gift baskets. As you might have realized by now, we have a very specific and good vision for our business and we want you to be a part of it. Frankly, we just have enough money to serve as the start-up capital of our retail shop but it is not enough to subsidize for other finances that we need like maintenance, promotional budgets, etc. Due to these, we would like you to be an investor in our company. According to our feasibility, it is one of the most promising businesses that is available in our area. We have also learned from our feasibility that in two years time, we c an already regain our capital; and in five years time, our projected income will be triple as compared from our starting capital. As part of our business, you would be entitled to every 10% of our monthly income to reimburse your investment. After we have paid the money, you will still be a partner of our shop. You can help
Is the American Dream Over Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Is the American Dream Over - Essay Example From this study it is clear thatà the opportunity to become a rich and successful citizen is influenced by the level of education. Here we can trace the main manifestations of inequality, which influence the future of the country and people. Rich people appear in advanced position. Good education in the USA costs much; therefore, the possibilities of a child to receive this education directly depend on the prosperity and the education level of his parents. Itââ¬â¢s hard for the parents to earn decent money without good education. The vicious circle appears as a result. The prospects of any American depend on the income and education of his/her parents more, than the prospects of a resident of almost any other developed country. On the other hand, many people think that income inequality is not a problem and the American dream is not so important for America.à This paper highlights thatà the most disappointing thing is that the rich are sure that they should live better, beca use they deserve it as they managed to earn money. Such ideas worsen the situation. In the last decades America chose the political agenda that left the most vulnerable sectors of society behind. The growing concentration of wealth and considerable decrease of taxes on it did not allow investing in education and protection of children. The unemployment rate among the schools graduates is growing rapidly. One more indicator of population distress significantly grew: the frequency of use of various discounts and benefits.

Pricing Decisions Case Study on the Springfield Noreasters Essay
Pricing Decisions Case Study on the Springfield Noreasters - Essay Example The league baseball industry is pretty bleak in the city of Springfield as of 2008. A minor league ice hockey team was about to leave the city because of unimproved revenues over the time. The Norââ¬â¢easters just opened up in the city and not a single match would be played for another one and a half year by the team. Most of the minor league baseball games in the US are well attended and there are as many as 176 minor league teams in the country. The fans considered the tickets to be affordable as they could closely watch the games. The government was also investing some bucks in the industry which was evident by player development programs and team funding. The marketing director should be delighted to know that the teams which provided value entertainment often had high attendance though the teams were mediocre. This shows that the industry has a great potential for the teams willing to entertain the audience, MarketThe citizens in the Springfield city can be said to be deprive d of the baseball league games as they had to travel to neighboring cities to watch these games. The market is very dilute for the baseball teams as no baseball team for the city exists. The Falcons, a minor league ice hockey team also was planning to leave the city because of low level of sales and numerous unsold tickets.à It was found in the secondary research that only 8% of the total sample Springfield population in 2005 attended a professional baseball game in that year.

Sun Tanning Beds Essay Example for Free
Sun Tanning Beds Essay The first original tanning lamp was discovered accidentally in 1903 by a German company called Heraeus who were developing lighting systems for the home and for industrial usage. These lamps were of the high-pressure metal halide variety. They discovered that the light that was developed for visible light purposes also emitted ultra-violet light. In the 1920s and 1930s Heraeus first started to market and sell single lamp, self standing tanning devices. The first high-pressure tanning beds incorporating more than a single high-pressure lamp were manufactured in the mid to late 1970ââ¬â¢s by companies such as Ultrabronz and JK Ergoline and in the 1980s the first high-pressure units were exported to the United States. Although tanning beds were initially brought to America by Friedrich Wolff in 1978, he soon patented his particular blend of phosphors and began licensing the technology to other companies. Wolff Systems has since devoted all their resources into lamp technology and development. Some of the early adopters of the Wolff technology include ETS, Inc. , SCA, Sun Industries, Inc. , Montego Bay, Sunal. Later, Friedrich sold Wolff Systems to his brother Jorg Wolff, who was the founder of Cosmedico, Ltd. , another pioneer in the tanning industry. A sun tanning bed is a device emitting ultraviolet radiation used to produce a cosmetic tan. Regular tanning beds use several fluorescent lamps that have phosphor blends designed to emit UV in a spectrum that is somewhat similar to the sun. Smaller, home tanning beds usually have 12 to 28 100 watt lamps while systems found in salons can run from 24 to 60 lamps each consuming 100 to 200 watts. In many ways, tanning beds are simply light fixtures that you lie under to tan. Most tanning beds use choke ballasts, a technology that has been around for about 100 years, consisting of a simple inductor which limits amount of current passing through, and requires a lamp starter to preheat the ends of the lamp briefly at start. Newer ballast systems include magnetic ballasts, electronic ballasts and more recently high frequency ballasts that induce tanning and other fluorescent lamps to work using less wattage, by using higher frequencies. In general, newer ballast designs produce less heat and are more energy efficient. The ballasts regulate the power that is sent to the lamps, so that if you install a 160W lamp in a tanning bed that has 100W ballasts, only 100W will be delivered to the lamp and may actually create less UV and shorter lamp life since the bulb is designed for higher current. The lamp starter part of the bed is used only on beds with choke ballasts and is a simple plasma starting switch. It has no bearing on how powerful the bed is. Like all fluorescent lamps, low pressure tanning lamps work when the ballast directs enough energy to the lamp that a plasma is generated inside the lamp. The lamps are coated on the inside with special phosphors and contain a small amount of mercury (20 mg typical). Unlike high pressure lamps, the glass that is used in low pressure lamps automatically filters out all UVC. Once the plasma is fully flowing it strips away the outer electrons from the mercury, sending them into the phosphor, which produces photons in the proper spectrum for tanning. The electrons, now in a lower energy state, will jump back into place onto the first mercury atom they find with an electron missing. The surfaces on which the tanner lies and which shields the user by physical separation from the lamps on the bench and canopy are typically referred to as the ââ¬Ëacrylicsââ¬â¢. Acrylics are manufactured from a base material of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA), type UVT (UV-transmitting), which has been formulated to have a spectral transmittance in the wavelength region 290-400 nm. This should not be confused with a standard acrylic, or ââ¬Ëplexiglassââ¬â¢, which would not transmit within this spectral range, effectively inhibiting the tanning properties of the unit. Base resins are typically cell-cast or extruded into sheet and then thermoformed to manufacture the acrylics. On occasion, depending on the complexity of the part, the resin will be injection molded. It is due to the expense of the specially formulated resin, handling considerations and manufacturing processes which drive the cost of acrylic parts, which can be high when compared to standard grade acrylic which can be purchased at your local home improvement store. These acrylic materials should never be cleaned with any agent containing alcohol (i. e. glass cleaner), as this will adversely affect the material surface causing a phenomenon known as ââ¬Ëcrazingââ¬â¢. This will present itself as small fissures resembling spiderwebs forming where stresses are most concentrated on the part and in the region which was subjected to the chemical attack. These shields break down over time as they are exposed to UV and oxygen and must be reconditioned every few years. Failure to do so will reduce the transparency of the acrylic to UV rays, although to the eye it will still appear perfectly clear. The reconditioning is most commonly done with a compound called Novus #2, which is a slightly gritty cleaning compound that removes a microlayer of the acrylic, restoring to near new condition and is used in many other industries. This being said, a better practice is to replace the acrylic as the oxidation described above affects the physical properties of the material rendering it less impact resistant. Most mainstream tanning beds built today use similar electronics, with the primary differences being in the design and quality of the frame and shell of the bed, as well as the number and type of lamps used. The newer electronics are very promising because of their lower power usage, cooler running temperature, and more environmentally friendly components. Tanning beds have about 3-8 times greater UVA than sunlight, while the ââ¬Ëwarning signsââ¬â¢ of overexposure, such as sunburn, do not appear at the same rate indoors as out. Furthermore, the radiation levels are more intense, requiring individuals to limit their exposure to very brief periods. The carcinogenic mutations in some skin cancers have been linked to UVA radiation more than UVB, suggesting that beds have different risks than natural light. The UVA light is also more strongly associated with skin aging than UVB, and with genetic damage. Natural sunlight exposure has made studies of artificial tanning difficult, since many people are exposed to both. There are indisputable values to moderate sunlight exposure. UVB light induces the body to synthesize Vitamin D. Vitamin D is required for calcium absorption, and improves development and reduces cancer risk. The amount of sunlight required, however, is estimated to be less than a single tanning session provides (10 minutes of strong sunlight for many people). The benefits of artificial tanning are generally related to enjoyment and speed. Tanning makes most people feel good. A more useful benefit of tanning indoors rather than tanning outside is the amount of control the tanner has. If a person decides to get a suntan and wants to minimize the risk of getting a sunburn, a tanning bed offers an environment that delivers the same amount of UV in a given period of time, day after day. Tanning beds also offer time savings when compared to tanning outdoors. Most tanning beds offer a maximum session time of 20 minutes and a person can maintain a tan with 1 to 2 sessions per week. For individuals living in urban areas, or who work extended hours, a tanning bed may be the only opportunity for tanning or UV exposure of any kind. A frequently mentioned benefit of artificial tanning is the increased production of Vitamin D. It is believed that indoor tanning beds are useful for the treatment of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), though this is disputed at present. Some people with psoriasis or eczema are treated with UVB light therapy. This is typically in the 310 nm to 315 nm portion of the UVB spectrum. Virtually all fluorescent tanning lamps have one spectral peak within this region of the UVB spectrum, making them an effective tool in mild to moderate cases. UVA light therapy is also used in dermatology. This is often combined with either an oral or topical medication called Psoralen. This combined therapy is referred to as PUVA. Artificial tanning from UV exposure is known to cause cancer, make skin grow old and wrinkle faster, mutate DNA, and reduce the immune system, as well as other possible effects. These problems are believed to be worse from tanning in a tanning bed or sunbed than from the sun, due to the different intensity and spectrum of the artificial light. UVA light specifically, (sometimes called ââ¬Ëbronzing lightââ¬â¢) is clearly associated with increased skin aging and wrinkle production. This is because UVA penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB, and therefore causes damage on a deeper level. Most aging of skin is due to UVA rays destroying collagen and connective tissue beneath the superficial layer of the skin. The US Public Health Service states that UV radiation, including the use of sun lamps and sun beds are ââ¬â¢known to be a human carcinogen (cancer causing agent). ââ¬â¢ It further states that the risk of developing cancer in the years after exposure is greatest in people under 30 years old. There is persuasive evidence that each of the three main types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma, is caused by sun exposure. Women who visited a tanning parlor at least once a month were 55% more likely to later develop melanoma than women who didnt artificially suntan. Young women who used sun lamps for tanning while in their 20s had the largest increase in subsequent cancer risk about 150% higher than similar women who did not use tanning beds. A growing trend is the home tanning bed. Many people are now opting to own their own tanning system instead of going to the salon. The primary reasons are sanitation concerns and convenience. The average home system has 16 to 24 lamps, and costs $2000 to $3000, making its price competitive (over a number of years) for tanners who frequent salons regularly. This has led to an explosion of retailers that feature smaller, home style tanning beds both on the internet and in traditional retail stores. Another trend is spray on tanning (a form of sunless tanning), using either special booths or a hand held setup similar to an airbrush. Many people who try spray on tanning often still go to the tanning salon, and use the spray on as a way to jump start the appearance of a tan, while others use it as a way to look tan while avoiding UV exposure of any kind. This is also demonstrated by the large number of indoor tanning lotions that have bronzers included, which is similar to the chemicals used for spray on tans, DHA.

Southwest Airlines Culture, Mission and Values
Southwest Airlines Culture, Mission and Values The most impressive thing I find about Southwest Airlines (SWA) is the history of the company. I really admire how Herb Kelleher fought to create SWA, even when everything and everyone was against him, and how his warrior spirit has shaped the organizationÃâà ´s culture and performance. Also it is very impressive to me how the company can be profitable with a low cost strategy. It is well known that airlines companies do not make any gain even with high ticket prices so it is really amazing to me how SWA is successful in this point. Finally I am really impressed with its human resources management and the spirit of the company. I found really interesting that a customer driven business dedicated to sales has one of its core principles stating Employees come first and customers come second. I think it is a really smart thought to believe that happy employees will keep customers happy. What grade would you give Southwest management for the job it has done in crafting the companys strategy? What is it that you like or dislike about the strategy? Does Southwest have a winning strategy? In my opinion, management did a great job crafting the strategy of the company. At the beginning, Herb Kelleher saw a market opportunity with the flight triangle and fought hard to sustain the company. With his performance and behavior indirectly he was setting the pillars of Southwest. Since the beginning Herb established the mission and vision of Southwest and objectives pointing out the path to follow. Also Herb hired very talented executives and managers with much experience in the sector. The only thing that I do not like about the SWA strategy is that I think is limited on growth. The planes purchased, the airports working at and some in-flight services such as not offering meals limit the possibility of expanding internationally. According to the book Essentials of Strategic Management (Chapter 1) to know if a company winning strategy, 3 questions can be used: Does the strategy fit the companys situation? Has the strategy yielded a sustainable competitive advantage? Has the strategy produced good financial performance? In my opinion, SWA has excellent performance in each of the questions. The strategy fit competitive conditions in the industry (external) and has important resources and capabilities. Also the cost reductions carried out by the company confers a competitive advantage over competitors and the financial performance is excellent. What are the key policies, procedures, operating practices, and core values underlying Southwests efforts to implement and execute its low-cost/no frills strategy? They key policies that I find on Southwest are: Using only one type of airplane: as it is explained in the case, using only Boeing 737 allowed them to minimize to minimize the size of spare parts inventories, simplify the training of maintenance and repair personnel, improve the proficiency and speed with which maintenance routines could be done, and simplify the task of scheduling planes for particular flightsà [1]à . Introduction of ticketless travel: this element helped SWA to reduce cost related to travel agents and emission of paper ticketsà [2]à . Deemphasizing of congested airports, helping them to produce better-than-average on-time performance and reduce fuel costà [3]à . Implementation of point-to-point scheduling of flights, which is more cost-efficient than the hub-and-spoke systems implemented by competitor airlinesà [4]à . Use of fuel hedging and derivate contracts to counteract rising prices for crude oil and jet fuel. Empowerment of employees and TQM approach, contributing to fast problem solving and efficiency. The motto employees are first, customers second has generated a strong company culture motivating employees to do their jobs in the best way, achieve goals and objectives more efficiently and thus, creating a direct contribution to the companyÃâà ´s profitability. What are the key elements of Southwests culture? Is Southwest a strong culture company? Why or why not? What problems do you foresee that Gary Kelly has in sustaining the culture now that Herb Kelleher, the companys spiritual leader, has departed? The culture of Southwest Airlines primarily involves giving importance and emphasis on the overall welfare of its employees, having its operative principle of employees come first and customers come second. Particularly, the key elements of SWA culture are: Fun atmosphere and work environment: promoted through entertaining behaviors in performing their jobs, an ongoing pranks and jokes, and frequent company-sponsored parties and celebrations. High compensation and numerous incentives. Can do attitude: this enables the employees of the company perform their jobs effectively, solve problems efficiently, overcome adversities and celebrate the companys success. Companys culture of not giving up: developed through all the adversities the company had to face Cost-consciousness: seeking to reduce costs in every step of the business. Empowerment of employees: this motivates employees and makes them feel as an important part of the company. In my opinion it is clear that that Southwest Airlines is a strong culture company.Ãâà All elements pointed before make employees of SWA feel as part of a big family rather than merely employees of accompany who does not care about them. This feeling make the employees to work hard for the success of the company and they see the companyÃâà ´s success as professional and personal achievements. Regarding the problems that I can foresee with Gary Kellys promotion, and according to the information given in the case, I cannot foresee real problems on sustaining the culture. Gary has been in the company for enough time to know which ones are the core values of SWA and the key elements of its success. Maybe the only problem I foresee is that Kelleher was very important for the organization and it will take a while to Gary to gain that position but the path that he will walk will be the same as the one walked by his predecessor. This is sustained with the video watched in class. In the video Gary Kelly was presented as a down to earth boss who knows most of his employees, and still follows the ideas established by Kelleher like treating the customers as queens and kings and employees better. What grade would you give Southwest management for the job it has done in implementing and executing the companys strategy? Which of Southwests strategy execution approaches and operating practices do you believe have been most crucial in accounting for the success that Southwest has enjoyed in executing its strategy? Are there any policies, procedures, and operating approaches at Southwest that you disapprove of or that are not working well? According to the book Essentials of Strategic Management (chapter 10) a successful strategy must have 8 components: In my opinion, SWA is successful in most of the eight points: SWA is mainly characterized on recruiting the best and bights people they can find and then retain them with excellent compensation packages, opportunities for rapid advancement and professional growth, and challenging and interesting assignmentsà [5]à . The success of SWA was to tackle those activities that were critical in its low-cost strategy. The company only operates one type of aircraft, was the first company to introduce ticketless travel or point-to-point scheduling of flights. These are just few examples on how research and marketing departments put their entire effort on finding ways to reduce cost in every step of the service offered. Also the TQM approach is very good implement due to the empowerment of employees at all levels: empowering people to take decisions will make a positive difference every dayà [6]à and the improvement of total customer service and satisfaction by hiring personnel who enjoyed interacting with customers and developing marketing tools as frequent-flyer program and rapid reward based on trips flown rather than mileage. SWA has a really strong corporate culture fostered by its executive management level. In SWA managers are expected to spend at least one-third of their time out of the office, walking around the facilities under their supervision, observing firsthand what is going on, listening to employees, and being responsive to their concerns. Also company executives are very approachable and in 1990 formed a Culture Committee. All this things also help to pursue the goal of customer satisfaction. SWA also believed in training and promotions. Approximately 80-90% of SWA supervisory positions were filled internally. Also the salaries are above the industry average. It introduced a profit sharing plan for senior employees and stock option programs. All this contributes significantly on tying rewards to the achievement of performance objectives. For all this reasons I think that SWA management deserves an A for the job done in executing the companyÃâà ´s strategy. The approaches and operating practices most crucial in accounting for the success that Southwest has enjoyed in executing its strategy has been their cost containment, recruiting process and organizationÃâà ´s culture. Regarding the policies, procedures, and operating approaches that are not working well I can see that there is a weakness regarding the support systems. Many case analysis of the company point out that Southwest must be required to modify and upgrade a significant portion of its internal software to guarantee that its computer systems will function properly. What weaknesses or problems do you see at Southwest Airlines? The weakness I see in SWA is related to one point of its strategy. The current strategy of only flying to second line airports represents a problem of limited growth and there are still big cities in the USA without SWA services. And this is contradictory with the ideas of Gary C. Kelly. As it is explained in the case, during his tenure as a CEO, Kelly has worked with other top-level Southwest executives to sharpen and fine-tunes SWAÃâà ´s strategy in a number of areas and continued expanding the operations (adding both more flights and initiating service to new airports). The current strategy has a space limit that will restrain companys desires of expansion. What recommendations would you make to Gary Kelly? The first recommendation I will make to Gary Kelly is to try to keep going with the company as it is, feeding companys culture and good environment. Also try to keep their low-cost strategy even through bad times. The second suggestion I would make to Gary Kelly will be to modernize its fleet ( I have read that it is a bit old), purchase bigger planes and expand the flights to other main cities in the U.S and expand their business to other countries close to the U.S such as Mexico or Canada.

Army Alpha Testing :: essays research papers
The first mental tests designed to be used for mass, group testing were developed by psychologists for the U.S. Army in 1917-1918. The group tests were modeled after intelligence tests designed for individual use in one-on-one assessment. In developing the mental tests, the psychologists subscribed to the position that one could be quite intelligent, but illiterate or not proficient in the English language. Based on this reasoning, two major tests were developed, the Army Alpha for literate groups, and the Army Beta for illiterates, low literates or non-English speaking (Yerkes, 1921). Both tests were based on the theoretical position that intelligence was an inherited trait, and the assumption was made that native intelligence was being assessed. Each test was made- up of a number of subtests (Figure 4), the contents of which differed depending on whether the test was for literates or illiterates, low literates or non- English speakers. Test 1: Following Oral Directions, involves auding and comprehending simple or complex oral language directions and looking at and marking in the appropriate places on the answer sheet. Test 2: Arithmetical Problems, requires both the ability to read and comprehend the stated problem and the knowledge of arithmetic to perform the computations called for. Test3: Practical Judgment, clearly requires reading and comprehending language. Additionally, however, it requires knowledge of culturally, normative expectations to make the "correct" choice. Test 4: Synonyms-Antonyms, requires specific vocabulary knowledge, in addition to the knowledge of "same" and "opposite." Test 5: Disarranged Sentences, requires semantic knowledge about flies as well as grammatical knowledge to rearrange the sentences, and information has to be held in working memory while rearranging the sentences. Test 6: Number Series Completion, emphasizes reasoning with number knowledge in working memory. Test 7: Analogies, clearly emphasizes culturally determined, semantic knowledge retrieval from the long term memory knowledge base, and also information processing in working memory to detect similarities among the different knowledge domains addressed by the analogies. Test 8: Information is heavily loaded with cultural knowledge requirements. Based on a person's total Alpha score he was assigned a letter grade of A (superior intelligence), B. C+, C (average intelligence), C-, D, or D- (inferior intelligence). The letter grade became the person's mental category, and was taken as a general indicator of the person's native intelligence. This position was held even though there was a clear relationship of Alpha scores to years of schooling, in which much of the special knowledge, vocabulary and cultural knowledge would have been developed. House Bunny Movie Review Essay
In the film House Bunny, a 27-year-old girl, Shelley Darlingson, played by Anna Farris, finds herself tricked out of the Playboy Mansion by another bunny for being too old. Shelley winds up at the University of Southern California and becomes the house mother in a very poorly kept sorority house, Zeta Tau Alpha, consisting of six socially awkward girls. After gaining the girlsââ¬â¢ trust by showing them she is nice and can attract boys, she does her best to turn the ZTA girls around to be popular beautiful young ladies who are ââ¬Ëbetterââ¬â¢ than the other sorority girls. However, the changing of personalities goes too far and the girls realize theyââ¬â¢ve changed for the wrong reasons and begin to judge everyone. During the time Shelley is being blamed, she receives a call about how ââ¬Ëbeing too oldââ¬â¢ was a lie to get rid of her. When expecting Shelley to immediately drop everything and return to the Mansion, she decides to stay the hose mother of the Zetas. U sing this movie I plan on analyzing the movie through different scenes of the typical activities of the sorority girls on campus and comparing them to how college life is today and what could be done differently. Throughout House Bunny, a constant rival goes on between Phi Iota Mu and Zeta Tau Alpha. When Zeta, a now popular sorority, throws a mixer party the same night as popular PIM, all of the girls going through rush and all of the fraternity boys enjoy their evening at Zeta instead of PIM. Girls are initiated at the party through ââ¬Ësacrificial rightsââ¬â¢ because they still have their virginity, music is played for everyone to dance to, and everyone enjoys their nights. These girls are focused on looking good now and being popular. Girls are very similar but a little different today. In todayââ¬â¢s society in the typical college experience, girls are not initiated in this way and girls do not throw the parties. The girls, instead of throwing their own parties, get all dressed up and head out to other fraternities to listen to music, drink and get together with different guys. Several girls nowadays waste their time and throw away their good morals every weekend, when they coul d be choosing better alternatives such as a staying in for the weekend or at least one night and study or relax with some friends. Time management and studying are two of the hardest strategies to master as a college student. Unfortunately when we have free time we cling to more fun activities at all times and then get caught up later when it is the last possible second to do homework and we realize we should have been working on homework rather than partying. Studying is not the most fun activity nor does it sound better than going out with friends to drink or participate in crazy college activities; however, everyone has to do it eventually and it would just be easier if you studied a little every free moment and then you would have more free time later. You would be more successful if you thought about every possible outcome of each choice clearly before doing anything. In the movie, after the Zeta girls become popular and look prettier, thanks to Shelley, they set up a tent at the involvement fair. All of the students rush towards their tent because they have food, games, and calendars of the girls looking t heir best. The Zetas are getting more involved around the campus, as students should, but through popularity not service. From this popularity the Zetas go downhill from there and turn into the popular rude crowd to those who do not ââ¬Ëbelong.ââ¬â¢ The Zetaââ¬â¢s stopped being who they were before Shelley became the house mother, the smart, nerdy, different crowd, and became the jerks who judged people off appearances. When trying to decide on bids for their house, they talked about how they had seen one of the girls before and thought they were weird and shouldnââ¬â¢t be allowed in their house. The Zetaââ¬â¢s stopped focusing on academics and their true personalities and tried to change for the ââ¬Ëbetterââ¬â¢ when it was clearly for the worse. Involvement is a key to surviving in college. You should get involved to make new friends, find others like yourself, develop study groups, and stress-reliever outlet clubs. However, when you try to be involved with the rest of the campus through primarily popularity and parties, you are getting ââ¬Ëinvolvedââ¬â¢ in all of the wrong ways. Instead of changing to be the popular crowd by looking hot and becoming a preppy jerk to ââ¬Ëfit in,ââ¬â¢ just express yourself more and get out in the real world to try and make more meaningful friendships that could last a lifetime. If people could be more accepting and friendly instead of being quick to judge, everyone would have more friends and the world would be a better place. Acceptance is one of the biggest problems especially at a college where if you arenââ¬â¢t accepted you just hide from everyone and get discouraged. Everyone as a whole should work to be more accepting of others for who they are. I am not saying everyone has to like everyone else, but I am saying at least give everyone else a chance to shine and join the group. When a smart nerdy group of socially unaccepted girls get a new playhouse bunny house mother they turn into a stereotypical group of rude sorority girls who just want everyone to be in their house so they can be more popular as long as they are ââ¬Ënormal.ââ¬â¢ If people took the time to accept everyone and give everyone a chance, people would have more friends and not be as nervous to try to make new friends. Getting involved on campus is smart as long as you are getting involved in the right ways with the right group of people so you can make a difference in your community. Getting involved also has advantages, because it can help manage time and studying habits or even study groups. Involvement in the college community is smart so good grades can be attained, meaning better opportunities later. Managing your time and taking the time to study receives full benefits later, as well. College is not easy, especially when coming in as a freshman new to the whole idea of college. However, college can be enjoyed and mastered if you try to get involved, study more, accepts more people for who they are, and manage your time to the best of your ability. Causes of Forest Fires
The world has many natural disasters which cause many human and material losses. An example of these disasters are floods, air pollution and forest fires. So, this essay will highlight the main causes of forest fires. The first main cause of forest fires is because of nature. It can be caused by many factors like lightning . When the Lightning strikes a tree, the tree begins to burn with fires which expanded to other trees and unlikely the flames continue non-stop.For instance, the numbers of forest fires which destroying million of hectares of valuable trees are increasing more than 100,000 in USA (rubychacha, Boutique Market Research Agency: online). Forest fires can be caused by earthquakes since it cause a lot of massive fires where it lead to incidence many losses whether human or martial. For example, the greatest destruction which caused by earthquake in San Francisco in 1906, it took only a minute but it caused many worst natural disasters like one of them forest fires.Anothe r disaster, it is in Tokyo in 1923 where it caused a huge forest fires (Arbor Day Foundation: Causes of Forest Fires). They are other factors from nature cause forest fires, such as, high temperature with drought and strong wind ,all this factors lead to fires. Bush-fires in the summer frequently occur in Australia (rubychacha, Boutique Market Research Agency: online). Due to the fact, the nature can cause many wounded on the world like forest fires disasters. The second main cause of forest fires is because human.Clearing land is a good example can cause forest fires which sometimes we cannot control it (buzzle, Bora: online). There are several reasons make them burn trees such as social problems or there is no reason maybe only pyromania and this is known as retardation. Also in the mass demonstrations that the protesters make many crimes like one of them burn the forests. According to the Arbor Day Foundation that human carelessness increasing about more than 80 percent.Smokers a re one of causes of forest fires because they do not make sure that they get rid the cigarette. That what happens in many Arab and western countries because of human being. In conclusion, I think that human should be careful in our lives because one mistake can make a big problem like forest fires. However, dry weather can cause forest fires like what happening in Australia every summer. Therefore, human should be careful when they use petroleum materials.Resources Bora, C. Picasso
I have studied Picasso work because it is simply spectacular. The way he makes the cubists painting is amazing, he can show more than Just one viewpoint in a single angle which makes the painting that much better because it is like an entire book in a single picture. The layers and colors that express the emotions of this Weeping Woman are shown so clearly. The expression ââ¬ËCry my eyes out' She literally cries her eyes out, they pop out of the eye socket. Cubism is a type of art technique that allows you to see more than one viewpoint of he picture from Just a single angle; so you see the emotions that she is expressing.By 1937 the great Weeping Woman' was established by Pablo Picasso. He made this picture as a representation of a weeping woman living in Spain during the civil war. Picasso was from Spain although he lived in France; he wanted to express his feelings and perspective on how the civil war has affected those living there. The Weeping Woman displays what it clearly s tates, a sad, a weak and worried woman however I believe strongly that there is more to this than Just being sad. The first feature I notice is her eyes. The way the both engage towards the audience as they were looking at someone and telling them to feel her pain as so the people of Spain. As well as this, her eyes seem to be falling out of her sockets, which could suggest that she has been ââ¬Ëcrying her eyes outâ⬠this is linked to the civil war reaction that Picasso is trying to show the audience. Following this, it has come to my attention that beneath her eyes are running tears displayed in cold colors, he has used cold lords to imply that this is not warm a warm and cheerful painting, in fact he wants to make her look isolated and alone. The running tears look endless as they have been thee for a long time and have frozen so therefore they have become like freezing icicles leaving her with sore eyes. The woman's mouth is drooping down whilst biting an extremely distress ed tissue at the same time. This action of the Weeping Woman connotes that she is either anxious or nervous, on top of that the coloring of the tissue is the same colors as the tears; this may be because the issue holds many tears and memories she cannot let go of.The coloring of her skin is varied between yellow and green, which could propose that she may be ill or feeling sick, anxious or nervous because of hearing bad news to do with the civil war. This links to her clothing as she is wearing all black, which symbolizes death, and that maybe she will be attending a funeral. Her clothing including her hat suggests that she is very wealthy. Finally the background is emblematic of the Spanish flag, which resents his patriotism to his country, this shows that Picasso still has connections with Spain even though he is living in France. My favorite type of art is Abstract mainly because you can take something so simple and distort it to make it something no one has ever discovered. This is why I truly love the Weeping Woman because in my opinion it displays pure imagination, individuality and a unique interpretation of art seen from his eyes. Following this I also find the Weeping Woman extraordinary because the way he has placed all angles and viewpoints onto a flat piece of paper really makes you stop and think about what he is trying to portray through his work; it doesn't Just present itself it lets you see the portrait from the point of view you like best.My cubist painting could consist of only 3 things. Half of my face would be red for my bad (devil) side and blue half of my face, for the calm chilled (angel) side. And my final point could be a complete dark black background, this symbolizes that there is absolutely nothing there, so there is nothing that can get in my way of what I can achieve.
